Carnival or Apokries in Greece
THE TRADITION OF GAITANAKI DANCE
CULTURE
Gaitanaki is a traditional Greek dance and singing, custom of the Greek carnival. One person holds the pole and 12 dancers hold each one of the 12 coloured ribbons that are fixed on the top of the pole and hang from it. Tradition says that the 12 ribbons symbolize the 12 months of the year.
The dance goes as follows:
Each dancer passes under the next dancer’s ribbon, thus creating a circle. The result is a beautiful colourful braid created on the pole. But surely is not that easy.
Greece is a country full of cultural and religious traditions – and one celebration which is a bit of both is Clean Monday or “Kathari Deftera. Let’s take a look at some of the ways that Greeks celebrate one of the most important days of the year
The meaning of Sarakosti in Greece
In Greece we call this 40 day lenten period Sarakosti which is exactly what the word means in Greek – 40 days. The Great Lent starts on Clean Monday and ends on Holy Saturday, after midnight.
Οn Clean Monday, they also fly kites. Many people will set up shop along the roadsides selling kites as people head off to the parks and the seaside to fly them. The tradition of flying kites on Clean Monday takes place throughout the entire country.

Greek Apokria
Tsiknopempti (Greek: Τσικνοπέμπτη), literally Smelly Thursday, or even Charred, Smoky, or Barbeque Thursday "because of the smell of the grilled meat in the air",[1] is part of the traditional celebrations for Carnival (in Greek: Αποκριά) season in Greece and Cyprus.
